JAZZ has always ‘played’ a central role in Angus’ life. But it was his love of ‘Swing Jazz’ that lead him to launch his Big Band in 1995. Since then he’s played concerts to thousands, recorded two albums and appeared on TV and radio.
An accomplished songwriter, pianist and vocalist, Angus - a music graduate of London University and an Associate of the Royal College of Music - is also a highly regarded Jazz educator, both teaching and writing. He has also written a regular column on ‘Jazz Piano’ for Keyboard Review.
His broad repertoire extends from Jazz classics from the 1930’s, ‘40’, and 50’s to more contemporary numbers by Dave Brubeck and Jazz-influenced standards by Van Morrison and Sade.
‘The Big Band’ boasts sixteen top-flight musicians, whose unique sound is made up of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, bass, guitar, drums and piano. This provides the perfect vehicle for innovative arrangements of ‘Classic Jazz standards’, Latin Sambas and Bossa Novas which really get the audience up to dance.
The band has performed many charity concerts for Sargent Cancer Care most notably for a special sell-out Christmas Concert at The Royal Festival Hall in London in 2000.
2001 saw ‘The Big Band’ release their debut album “Now I know why”, featured on Jazz FM. Then this year, after performing throughout the UK, they’ve released their second album “It’s a swing thing” which is already selling well in North America and Japan.
Angus has a unique flair, fusing ‘Big Band Jazz’ with his own contemporary songwriting and has brought the sound of Miller and Basie right bang up to date.
